Educate, Agitate, Organise – reevaluating the balance
za 27 feb : 10:00 – 11:30
In a world where agitation seems to gain the most recognition, how can revalue the work of educating for, and building the foundation of a new world while the agitators disrupt the old one?
We seem to be rushing to put out fire after. But there is also a need to build alternatives as sustainable and resilient radical communities. What forms organisation, care and mutual aid would be needed to do this? And do we see any good examples of this at the moment? Should changing the world begin with a focus on building power through movement-based organizing? Or, as is the case in many of the current worldwide uprisings, should we start on the streets with more insurgent and confrontational activity, and use this momentum to start building from there? Building our own institutions and groups and educating people is a long and slow process. How can we build a community that calls more attention to the value of these more ‘passive’ and less sexy forms of activism?
Liz cares deeply about food and how the way we produce it affects us not only physically but also culturally. She has been volunteering with ASEED for about 3 years now, and believes that there are a broad range of actions to take to dismantle the oppressive systems we live under. An immigrant from the US, she worked as a chef for a decade before getting into campaigning for social and climate justice with agriculture as her main focus.
