Revolution in Kurdistan: Autonomy, Feminism, and Ecology

The heroic struggle of the people of Kobanê, Rojava (in Northern Syria) against ISIS has gained the attention of the world. How is the struggle in Rojava progressing, why was the world, and especially the radical left caught by surprise by this unfolding struggle and full scale revolution. Joost Jongerden and Michael Knapp will answer these and other questions and talk about the current events, and the ideas behind this revolution – Democratic Autonomy, Feminism, and Ecology.

Joost Jongerden, Assistant Professor at the Sociology and Anthropology of Development section of Wageningen University. He has a research interest in the ways power, politics and place amalgamate and wrote extensively about the Kurdish issue in Turkey and the PKK’s (Kurdistan Workers Party) new paradigm of radical democracy.

Michael Knapp, Historian, Author, Campaign Tatort Kurdistan. Research interest: Radical Democracy and social Liberation. Author of works about Democratic Autonomy, the PKK and counterinsurgency in the middle east. He is just back from a months research in Rojava.
